Peter Jennings

I will miss Peter Jennings. I really will. He was really the only newscaster I had an allegiance to, as in, if I had a choice of 3 networks and saw that he was doing one of the newscasts, I'd say "Oh good" and stay on his channel. I guess I can't even really say what network he was on - ABC, maybe - but I knew that if I wanted to watch some breaking news story, and Peter Jennings was one of my choices, I watched him. He was, as they say, suave and graceful, but also very human and unpretentious. He reminded me of a really good doctor or teacher, the kind who makes you feel as if his concern for you is genuine, and not job required (whether this is true or not - it's the impression that counts). I was pretty upset when I heard he had cancer, but I thought he would pull through. I'm surprised he was 67, though - I thought he was much younger. Goddamn shame, still.

I felt the same way about Tom Brokaw. But Peter was equally classy, and I was very sad to see his last broadcast. The write-up I found on msnbc.com said that although he said he'd continue the broadcast after that (his final one), he never went back on the air. I found that very sad.

RIP, Mr. Jennings

Yeah, I found that sad, too. That and the fact that he quit smoking 20 years ago, and resumed the habit after 9/11, but quit again. Just goes to show that, as my doctor told me, we just don't *know* how many cigarettes are too many.

Yeah, he was my favorite, too. I don't think I've watched ABC's nightly news since. :o(

My (future) mil and bil said the same. They're avid conservatives, too - I always thought I detected a liberal glimmer in his eye, especially after the presidential winner was announced in 2000 and 2004.
